Requirements

If you’re applying for a Japan visa with a sponsor or guarantor, here’s a complete list of requirements you’ll need to prepare.

1. Guarantee Letter

The first requirement is a guarantee letter. Fortunately, the Japan embassy provides a standard form that you can download and fill out. You can access the official form here: Guarantee Letter. Make sure to fill it out correctly and completely before submitting.

2. Proof of Relationship Between Applicant and Guarantor

You must provide proof of your relationship with your guarantor. Here’s what to submit depending on your relationship:

  • If your guarantor is a parent: birth certificate

  • If your guarantor is a spouse: marriage certificate

  • If your guarantor is a sibling: submit both of your birth certificates to show you share one or both parents.

For non-immediate family members or friends, you don’t need legal documents.

Another requirement which you can submit regardless of your relationship with your guarantor are photos to prove your relationship.

Photo submission tips:

  • Choose photos that clearly show a close relationship.

  • You can print or photocopy multiple photos on one A4-sized paper.

  • Leave space to label each photo with both your name and your guarantor’s name.

Although it’s not explicitly required, I highly recommend attaching a cover letter explaining your relationship with your guarantor. If your guarantor is not an immediate family member, a cover letter can clarify your connection. Also, include your and your guarantor’s financial and employment details to make it easier for the embassy to understand your application.

3. Financial Documents

Aside from these documents, you must also submit your guarantor’s financial documents, such as their bank certificate, tax payment certificate, and employment certificate. These are the same as the applicant’s requirements, which I discussed in detail in the blog post below, so check that out for a complete guide.

Tips for a Smooth Japan Visa Application

1. Submit Your Own Financial Documents If You’re Covering Any Expenses

If you are paying for part of your trip, you must submit your own financial documents along with your application. Again, check out the blog post above for a detailed breakdown of financial requirements.

2. Declare Your Guarantor’s Information in Your Application Form

When filling out your visa application form, make sure to properly declare your guarantor’s details. You can refer to the sample document here for guidance.

3. Explain the Financial Breakdown in Your Cover Letter

Clearly outline how the expenses for your trip will be divided. For example:

  • Will you and your guarantor share expenses 50-50?

  • Are you only covering 20% of the trip?

  • Is your guarantor paying for flights and accommodations?

  • Are you covering just your pocket money?

Providing a clear financial breakdown will help the embassy assess your financial capacity and your guarantor’s ability to support your trip.

Final Thoughts

Applying for a Japan visa with a sponsor or guarantor may seem overwhelming, but with proper preparation and complete documents, you can increase your chances of approval. Follow these guidelines, double-check your application, and provide clear explanations when necessary.
